The Department of Economics has been functioning from the June 1965. The B.A. Degree course in Economics was affiliated to the University of Madras in July 1969 and the first batch of students came out of the college successfully in April-May 1972. The strength in the B.A. Degree Course in Economics had gradually declined, which compelled the collegeto close the shutters for admission to the B.A., Degree Course in Economics in May 1977. Since then the Department of Economics has been handling classes for students of II B.A., History, I B.COM (Corporate Secretaryship), I B.COM, II B.COM., III B.COM which have Economics as Allied Subject.
The Economics Association and Planning Forum, affiliated to the Department of Economics conduct regular Elocution Competitions for the benefit of students with the objectives of encouraging college students to think and speak on Economic Issues. The Departmental Library has Applied Economics related books. The Department evinces keen interest in the progress of students in the subject concerned by catering to their academic needs.
The Department of Economics is actively participating in guiding and counselling students. The Department monitors the performance of students through regular assessment. Counselling sessions are organized to better the performance of slow learners. The Department is consistently producing commendable result in the University Examinations.
The Department of Economicsnow become research Department and it has Part-time Ph.D., Programme in Economics.

Mission Statement

To emerge as a learning centre that imparts liberal education in Economics bringing together human, financial and technological resources, in shaping minds for the betterment of society.

Objectives of the Department

  1. To appreciate the principles of Economics and apply them in day-to-day life situations.

  2. To instill an awareness about the national and international economic scenario.

  3. To develop analytical thinking skills in the study of socio-economic issues and to facilitate its research.
